Jackson/Ferreira

Jackson/Ferreira Preserve was created from two abutting parcels on Quaker Lane, one of which was listed by a broker as a lot for development. These adjoining parcels make up a combined 20.9 acres and are named in honor of Lillian and Abraham Jackson and Manuel and Arminda Ferreira. Member donations were used to purchase the parcels simultaneously. This acquisition was also partially funded by the Buzzards Bay National Estuary Program. We are thrilled to have been able to preserve potentially buildable land not only for the benefit of the wildlife, but also for the clean water that runs through it. Thank you to our members for making this possible! This wooded preserve once supported a historic sawmill, and has extensive vegetated wetland, wildlife habitat, and over 1,255 feet of frontage on Gifford’s Mill Pond and a perennial stream. It functions as one of the aquifers of the Mattapoisett River. The white areas on the map below show where the land is driest, while the green shows wetland areas.
